CANADA

  • Canada’s organic industry represents only about 4% of an agriculture and food sector that generates about $108 billion annually.
  • Annual retail sales of certified organic food products in Canada is approximately $5.4 billion, a 13.6% growth per year since 2007.
  • Approximately 5,053 certified organic and transitional producers are working on over 983,000 hectares of land in Canada. Over half of these producers are in Quebec, Saskatchewan and Ontario.
  • Of the certified operations, there are 4,045 primary producers, 618 livestock operations and 1,542 processors, manufacturers and retailers in Canada.
  • Organic areas now account for approximately 1.8% of total agricultural land in Canada.
  • The agriculture and agri-food sector are a key driver of Canada’s economy, and the success of the organic trade will help increase agri-food exports to $75 billion annually by 2025.
  • Since 2015, the Government of Canada has invested more than $50 million in support of the organic sector, focusing on facilitating adoption of innovative technologies; helping organic farmers and processors take advantage of market opportunities.

MEXICO

  • Mexico has the largest number of organic farms in the world, occupying the fifth global place with respect to the volume of production.
  • Of the total certified Mexican organic production, 85% is exported and 15% is for domestic consumption, which indicates that the main demand is abroad.
  • In 2018 sales to the United States increased 96.8%, reaching $278.5 million dollars.
  • Mexico is in the top 20 producers of organic foods worldwide, with 1.3 million acres of land dedicated to organic agriculture.
  • Mexico is the main producer and largest exporter of organic coffee and the third-largest producer of organic honey.
  • Other organic crops grown in Mexico include corn, cacao, avocados, sesame seeds, cactus paddles, vanilla beans, milk and dairy products.
  • The main organic food producing states in Mexico are Chiapas, Oaxaca, Michoacán, Chihuahua and Guerrero, which together account for 82 percent of the total organic crop land area.
  • Mexico is among the world’s top 20 exporting countries, and in fourth place as producer of organic foods; Japan, the U.S. and the European Union, among others, are importers of Mexican-grown organic foods.
  • The global organic food and beverages market was valued at approximately USD $124.76 billion in 2017 and is expected to generate revenue of around USD $323.09 billion by the end of 2024, growing at a CAGR of around 14.56% between 2017 and 2024.

USA

  • United States continues to be the largest market for organic products in the world representing approximately 48% of the total, followed by Germany and France with 12% and 8% respectively.
  • United States revenue of the organic sector surpassed $50 billion dollars in 2018; around 42% of global consumption. Sales volume keeps increasing at a historic rate of 4% annually and shows no signs of stopping.
  • The sales of Consumer-Packaged Goods (CPG) category also experienced a great increment of almost 9% in 2018, overtaking the $21 billion dollar turnover of the previous year.
  • Research estimates point to a possible doubling of organic products’ sales in the years 2020 -2025.
  • A recent survey conducted by the company Earthbound farm, pointed out that Millennials and Hispanics are the main demographic groups that participate in the organic products market.
  • The U.S Department of Agriculture published on February 11th, 2019 a report titled; U.S Organic food Exporters Set to Double Sales to EU, revealing that sales to the EU 28 of their products will double the figures reached in the previous tax year.
  • Sales of organic products in the US amounted to a record $49.4 billion dollars in 2017, 6.4 percent more than in the previous year.
  • The US organic agricultural sector continues to grow, as there were 6.5 million acres (approx. 2.6 million hectares) of certified organic land registered in August 2018 and 460 new operations during the year.
  • Organic products are now available in nearly 20,000 natural food stores and nearly 3 out of 4 conventional grocery stores.
  • The importation of organic products grew by 21.4% in 2017. The main imported products and their percentage of total organic products were coffee (17%), olive oil (14%), soy (13%), bananas (11%), avocados (6.5%), honey (6.2%) and yellow corn (5.9%).
